The last time I was in L.A. I had the opportunity to try Portland Cider Co. Sorta Sweet Cider at City Tavern, a cider I have not seen in the Chicago area. The cider is made with a blend of apples including Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Jonagold, Gala, Golden and Red Delicious. As advertised in the name, the cider is semi-sweet and the use of conventional apples (rather than the typically tarter heirloom) produces a cider that is a bit sweeter and appley than other craft ciders I have tried. The Sorta Sweet Cider is a good crowd pleaser, something that would appeal to the hard core cider drinkers as well as those new to the cider-world whose tastes may skew a bit sweeter. Now only if I could find it in Chicago…

Tasting Notes

Golden color with light effervescence. The aromas and flavors are reminiscent of juicy apples. This semi-sweet cider has a slight sweet finish that lingers on the tongue.

Wine Lovers — Why Drink It?

Chenin Blanc is a versatile grape and can range from dry to sweeter. The Sorta Sweet Cider is reminiscent of a medium ripe Chenin Blanc with slight sweetness and apple notes.

Score: 7.5/10 – Very Good
