Traditional Cider Review: Hogan’s Dry Cider

Traditional Cider reviews are dedicated to the ciders that are made with 100% apples.
Hogan’s Dry Cider
Cidery: Hogan’s Cider Ltd; Haselor, Warwickshire, UK
Cider: Dry Cider
Serving:  22 oz bottles
Alcohol Content: 5.8 % ABV
Style: Traditional Cider
We spotted a few of Hogan’s Dry Cider tucked away in a corner of the cider aisle of our local liquor store. We always like to try UK ciders, they typically use 100% English apples and Hogan’s is no different. We’ve found that most UK dry ciders fall into two categories – bone dry and crisp or yeasty and tart. Hogan’s Dry Cider falls into the latter.
Tasting Notes
Deep golden color with light carbonation and slight foamy head. Pungent yeasty aromas are the first to hit your nose follow by hints of apples. The taste is similar to the nose. The cider is off-dry with a slight bit of sweetness with tart apple flavors that are accented with sour fermented notes. The cider finishes with notes of apple and light spice.
Wine Lovers: Why Drink It?
This off-dry cider will appeal to California Chardonnay drinkers. The cider has several layers of complexity reminiscent of the complexity that oak can bring to a Chardonnay. The strong yeast and tart notes make for a unique cider experience which can overpower the food it is paired with. We suggest paring with sharp cheese.
Score:  6.0/10 – Good
