As part of our cider maker series, we highlight some of the smaller or more unique US cider makers.
Sean and I lived in St. Louis County for a few years and we were able to experience the burgeoning craft brewery scene before moving back home to Chicago. We are happy to see that Brick River Cider Co. was able to extend that craft spirit to ciders and become St. Louis’ 1st cidery. This midwest cidery is true to its roots and only uses fresh-pressed fruit, sourced from within 400 miles of St. Louis. In 2018, Brick River opened a 12,000-square-foot production facility and 180-seat tasting room and restaurant serving refined pub fare, in a former firehouse in Downtown St. Louis. Their modern ciders use a range of culinary apples including Fuji, Gala, McIntosh and Granny Smith. While we haven’t made it back to St. Louis in a while we were able to sample some of these ciders during Cider Summit in Chicago this past February.
“Corner Stone” is a semi-dry modern cider with a slight vanilla nose with light apple flavors, slight acidity, and an effervescent finish.
“Homestead” is semi-sweet and unfiltered. Pleasant floral apple notes greet you on the nose and a slight tart juicy apple flavor lingers on the palate.
“Brewer’s Choice” uses Alsatian hops which imparts a lemongrass and citrus flavor accented by herbal notes and a slightly drying finish.
